APPEAL TO “NATURAL” PROPERTIES

The Corporation may appeal to the “natural” properties of the product itself and thereby appeal to common sense. How could this product possibly cause problems? How can carbon dioxide be bad? It is naturally present and makes plants grow. How can fossil fuels be bad? They are derived from once living organisms. The atmosphere is resilient against chlorine because it occurs naturally (via volcanoes, for one), so the stratosphere can certainly handle ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Asbestos manufacturers believed that “asbestos was inherently useful, necessary, and therefore ‘good.’”19 How could eating meat be bad for anyone? Humans have canine teeth precisely because meat is a natural part of the human diet.
